The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has attributed the delay in implementing the newly approved increase in corps members’ monthly allowance, from N33,000 to N77,000, to the unavailability of funds.
Although the Federal Government announced the increment, effective from July 2024, through the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, corps members have yet to receive the updated payment as of September, causing widespread frustration.
NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, clarified in an interview with BBC Hausa that the funds required for both the corps members’ new allowance and a recent staff salary increase have not been released. Despite this, he expressed optimism that the payments would be made soon.

“Not only the corps members but also our staff have had their salaries increased about four to five months ago, but the implementation is still pending,” he explained. “We remain hopeful that the funds will be released soon. While we don’t have a confirmed date for the payment, we were informed that the allowance has officially been increased as of 29th July 2024.”
